Paul never tires of telling the people of God to be diligent in their prayer life. Doubtless one of the regrets we will have when we get to heaven, is that we did not spend enough time in prayer, especially when we realize the extent in which our prayers were answered. There is great mystery in connection with the whole subject of prayer, many questions which cannot be answered. But the best attitude for us as Christians is not to try to analyze or understand prayers deeper mystery. The best thing is to keep praying in the simple faith, laying aside one's intellectual doubts.

Not only are we to continue earnestly in prayer but we are also to be vigilant in it. This immediately reminds us of the Lord Jesus' request to the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane; “Watch & pray, lest you enter into temptation.” They were not vigilant & fell sound asleep. Not only are we to watch against sleep, but also against wandering thoughts, listlessness, & unreality. And we are to watch to see that we are not robbed of time of prayer (Ephesians 6:18) praying always with all prayer & supplication in the spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance & supplication for all the saints.  Our prayers are to be with thanksgiving. Not only are we to be thankful for the past answers to prayer, but in faith we can also thank the Lord for prayers He has not answered.

Guy King sums it up nicely: “His love wants the best for us; His wisdom knows the best for us; & His power gets the best of us. (or should get the best of us.

“With thanksgiving.” Be sure & thank God always because He is going to hear & answer your prayer. Maybe it won't be the answer you wanted, but He will  answer. This is like breathing: inhale by prayer, exhale by thanksgiving.
