V:17 is an all inclusive rule by which to judge our conduct as Christians. Today young people have difficulty with right or wrong. V:17; committed to memory, can prove to be the key to unlocking many of these problems. The great test should be can I do this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ? Would this be to His glory? Could I expect His blessings in this? Would I want to be doing this when He comes back? Notice here; that this test should apply to our actions as well as our words. Obedience to this command centers around all life. It is a great & precious secret when a Christian learns to do all he does to the glory of God. Once again the Apostle adds these words, “Giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Thanks! It is a perpetual duty for those served by grace & destined for the courts of heaven.

Paul simply says here, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. In your place of employment, in your home, & in all relationships with others <> can you say all you do is in the name of the Lord, then do it? This is a great standard to live by.

Paul told them to be filled with the Holy Spirit, & then he goes on to give them these instructions. Here in Colossians Paul writes; “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom,” & then he goes on to give instructions for living.

What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? It means that you will have to be filled with the Word of Christ also. You must have the Word of God if you are to serve Him. Because you cannot serve Him in your own strength as Peter found out.

Now if the Word of God dwells in you richly, it will work itself out in your life, & it will have an effect on your home.
