New life for believers <> Colossians 3:11

Point of Contact <> Bro. Ben Van Winkle

In the new creation of which the Apostle has been speaking; there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all & in all. Differences of nationally, religion, culture, & social levels are not the things that count. As far as standing before God is concerned, all believers are on the same level, and in local fellowships, this same attitude should be adopted.

This does not mean that there are no distinctions in the church. We have different gifts; some have the gift of evangelism, some of pastors, & some teachers. Some men are elders of the church & some are deacons. This verse does not belittle any one.

Neither should this verse be taken to teach that the distinctions, listed above have been abolished in the world. Such is not the case. There is still the Greek & the Jew, Greek here is standing for the Gentile people in general. There are circumcised & the uncircumcised. These two expressions are usually used in the New Testament to describe Jew & Gentile respectively. But here, they refer more to the ritual itself as practiced by the Jewish people, & disregarded by the Gentiles.

There is still the barbarians (uncultured people) & the Scythian. These two expressions are not in contrast to each other. The Scythians were barbarians, but were general considered to be the more extreme form; they were the most savage & wildest of the barbarians. The final is between slave & free. Free refers to those who have never been in bondage, but were born free. For the Christian these worldly distinctions are no longer of importance. It is Christ who really counts. He is everything to the believer & in everything. He represents the center & circumference of the Christian life.

The three words <> Christ is all <> are the essence & substance of Christianity. If our hearts can really go along with them, it is well with our souls <> many give Christ a certain place in their religion but not the place which God intended Him to fill. It must be Christ alone who has first place in our lives. Not Christ & something else.
