There is speculation on who the true companion is referring to in this verse.

It is most likely Epahroditus. He is exhorted to help these women who labored with Paul in the Gospel. We take it that these women were Euodia  (u-o-di-a) & Syntyche (sin-ti-che) & the Apostle Paul is giving them what has proved to be sound advice. Often when two people have been quarreling, the quarrel can be settled by a third party <> someone with mature, spiritual judgment. It is not that he acts arbitrarily & hands down a decision, but by appealing to the Word of God. He is able to show a Scriptural solution to the problem.

Take care in understanding the statement “Labored with me in the Gospel.” By no stretch of the imagination  can this statement be understood to mean that they preached the Gospel with Paul. There are many ways in which women can labor in the Gospel <> hospitality to the servants of Christ, by home visitation, by teaching younger women & children <> without assuming a ministry of public teaching or preaching.

We have another co-worker named Clement mentioned here. Nothing further is known of him with any certainty. Then Paul mentioned the rest of his fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. This is a way of expressing the eternal  & unspeakable blessedness that attaches to faith in Christ & service for Him.

Paul now turning to the entire church. He repeats the favorite exhortation. The secret of his exhortation is found in these words “In the words of the Lord” No matter how dark the circumstances of life are, it is always possible for the Christian to rejoice in the Lord.

The days are as changeable as the weather & yet the Christian joy can be persistent. Where lies the secret of its glorious persistency? Here is the secret. “Lo! I am with you all the days.” He is with me all the days” <> the prosperous days & the days of adversity, & days when the welcoming bell is ringing. All the days, “The days of life <> the days of death <> the days of judgment.
