Paul was ready to deal directly with the specific errors that had threatened the believers in the Lycus Valley, where Colosse was situated. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy & empty deceit. False teachers rob us of what is worthwhile, but give us nothing substantial in it's place. Philosophy literally means: “the love of wisdom.” This is not evil in itself, but becomes evil when men seek wisdom apart from Jesus Christ. Here men seek to find out by his own intellect & research those things which can only be known by divine revelation (1 Corinthians 2:14). Here it is evil because it lifts human reason above God & worships the creature more than the Creator. It is characteristic of the liberals of our day. Empty deceit refers to false & valueless teaching of those who profess to offer secret truths to an inner circle of people.

The philosophy & empty deceit which Paul attacks are according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, & not according to Christ. The traditions of men here means religious teachings which have been invented by men but which have no true foundation in Scriptures. (A tradition is a fixation of a custom which began as a convenience, or which suited some particular circumstances.)

The basic principles of the world refers to Jewish rituals, ceremonies, & ordinances by which men hoped to obtain God's favor.

The law of Moses had served its purpose as a type of things to come.

It had been a “primary school” to prepare the heart for the coming

Christ. To return to it now, would be to play into the hands of the

false teachers who conspired to use a discarded system to displace

      the Son of God.

Paul would have them test all teaching as to whether or not it agreed with the doctrine of Christ. Phillips translation of this verse is helpful: “Be careful that nobody spoils your faith through intellectualism or high sounding nonsense. Such stuff is at best founded on men's ideas of the nature of the world, & disregards Christ.
