Paul continues his intercession for the Colossians <> Colossians 1:13-14

God has liberated believers from the dominion of darkness. The Apostle Paul uses the common symbolism of light & darkness for good & evil. The kingdom from which believers have been rescued is the kingdom of darkness (John 1:4-9; Ephesians 5:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:5; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 John 1:5)

The Greek word redemption points to the payment of ransom for the release of a slave. The slavery from which a believer is released is spiritual not physical. As believers we are freed from the bondage of sin by the forgiveness of sin through the blood of Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 1:7.

Christ is first presented as the One in whom we have redemption <> the forgiveness of sins. Redemption describes the act where we were bought from the slave market of sin. The Lord Jesus put a price tag on us. How much did He value us? He said, “They are so valuable to Me that I am willing to shed My own blood to purchase them.” Since we have been purchased at such a high cost, it should be clear to us that we no longer belong to ourselves, we have been bought with His blood.  Therefore we should not live our lives as we choose, we should clean up our actions, we should clean up our mouths, we should be very careful how we present ourselves in public as well as private. If we do what we want with our lives, (after the price Christ paid for us) we are thieves.

Not only has He redeemed us; He has given us the forgiveness of sins. This means God has cancelled the debt of sin which we owed. Jesus paid the penalty on the cross; it is paid for & never needs to be paid again. The account is settled, it is closed, & God has not only forgiven us, but has removed our sins as far away as the East is from the West. (Psalm 103:12).

So, you see He has given us a way out & it is up to us. It is a gift of Grace from Him to us, our debt has been paid.
